This website brings together all aspects of digital media on openSUSE Linux, from  playing DVD's  and recording digital TV to creating a fully connected digital home, where all your media is accessible over wireless networks streamed from a central server.

In a world where Digital Rights Management (DRM) and Proprietary software are encroaching on our ability to enjoy content that we have paid for, you might just find using Linux and Open Source software an emancipating experience.

Freedom of course has a price, its called participation. Having had my MythTV  Linux Media Centre up and running for a few years now, and enjoying it thoroughly. I wanted to put back a little of the experience and help that I have received from the community.

The content here should be useful to many users, not just those that have a passion for Linux. I have tried to make the field of digital home entertainment as accessible as possible which is, after all, what Open Source is all about.

I was asked why I would want to build a Personal Video Recorder (PVR) and Media Centre in Linux when you can now go and buy a hard disk video recorder with twin Freeview Tuners for as little as £200 these days. The answer is simple.... Digital connection to my Plasma TV for maximum picture quality.

It's crazy that people go and spend a fortune on the latest flat panel TV and then convert their digital TV signal to analogue (component or RGB SCART ) connect a flat panel display and then have the display convert it back to digital. Any wonder why all those TV's in Curry's and Comet look soooo fuzzy?

It's also obvious to me that most modern Flat Panel displays still do not do as good a job of scaling standard definition video sources as MythTV's software scaler, and the picture quality difference is obvious to the untrained eye.

openSUSE Linux now offers the capability to enjoy nearly every type of digital media there is, but the information is often spread all over the internet. From MP3 to DVD to Streaming I want to see what can be accomplished.

I want this site to focus on keeping the audio and video signal in its digital form all the way to the speakers and display. We now have fully digital amplifiers as well as flat panel displays that take a direct digital signal.

The good news is that on Linux ,digital TV as well as  DVD playback are very good these days, and with openSUSE  you can now have digital TV direct to your desktop without having to be a programmer.

Start with the Quick Start Guide, and then browse the site from there.

Just remember one thing. Computers are Time Machines; hours disappear for no reason at all.

Enjoy.
